Peggy J. Byrd, Director of Finance
and Administration
A native of North Carolina, moved to Tennessee following school at Chowan University and living and working in Raleigh, North Carolina. I began my Tennessee career working in the University of Tennessee system Development Office for six years where I gained immeasurable experience in fund raising and public relations. I had the good fortune in 1973 to move to the UT College of Law where I was employed as the Administrative Assistant to Charles Henderson Miller, founder and director of the UT Legal Clinic and Knoxville Legal Aid Society. I have continued to work with legal aid since that time. I moved full time to Knoxville Legal Aid as Director of Administrative Services in 1982 when UT and KLAS ceased their relationship as co-recipients of Legal Service Corporation funding. I have had the unique opportunity to work with every legal aid director in the Central Region and have had first hand involvement with the establishment of the Pro Bono Project as well as the program’s expansion into Blount County. I became Director of Human Resources in 2002 with the merger of three legal service programs into Legal Aid of East Tennessee. In 1973, I never would have imagined that 37+ years later, I would still be with legal aid and that I would have had this unique opportunity to have worked with such dedicated and skilled advocates and staff all committed to the common goal of "Justice for All."
